Gentle pathways take you to three scenic nature walks, suitable for all ages and abilities, in the heart of Devon and Dartmoor Countryside.
Working together with the Devon Wildlife Trust the Dartmoor wildlife habitat is being maintained and improved; and our three nature walks of varying lengths cover a huge range of wildlife habitat, with views over open countryside, resting points, and Devon Wildlife Trust information boards.
The Falls Nature Walk
Marked in red the Falls Nature Walk takes you up ninety Victorian steps winding their way towards the summit of the Falls. Passing through the Secret Garden and the Fern Garden, you finally reach the platform at Buzzards View where a breathtaking panorama of the Devon and Dartmoor countryside awaits you. A reasonable fitness is required and stout shoes or trainers are recommended. The walk takes approx 1 hour and 20 minutes..
Marked in blue, Grandad's Way is a flat nature walk that is delightful and less strenuous, taking you around the main lake and meadows. In spring the lake is a haze of purple and pink from the rhododendrons, and in summer it is covered in white lillies. A haven for wildlife, look out for the moorhens that use the lily pads as stepping-stones - it is very funny to watch!! Suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs the wildlife walk takes approx 20 minutes and is a wonderful introduction to the beauty of Dartmoor’s natural habitats.
Lakeland Wildlife Walk
Marked in yellow, the Lakeland Wildlife Walk is a gently undulating grassy trial. The lakes, now very well established, provide a combination of traditional English wetland vegetation along with selected exotic water plants and attract many types of birds and wildlife. A haven for wildlife, we are working together with the Devon Wildlife Trust to manage our lakes sustainably. Our Devon Wildlife Trust information boards around the lake examine the extraordinary dragonflies and damselflies that have made our lakes in Devon their natural habitat. This is a fascinating nature walk, giving you the opportunity to spot kingfishers, bats, butterflies, wildfowl and otter; the ancient wetland area close to the Elizabethan walled garden provides a habitat for swathes of yellow flag irises. The bridge over the stream takes you through a grassy meadow and past some magnificent old oak trees. The walk takes approx 40 minutes.
Our souvenir booklet provides further information about the waterfalls, lakes and scenic walks, including a detailed map of each route. It is available to purchase from our gift shop which also sells an array of Devon and Dartmoor souvenirs.
